By Britton Peele. I have a confession to make now, before God and all of you: As a teen, one of my primary motivations for going to church which wasn’t necessarily a weekly engagement for my family at the time was meeting girls. So the concept of a Christian dating service isn’t weird to me, even if a statement like “It’s Tinder but for Christians! I cleared the idea with my wife first, of course. Even if it was in the name of goofy journalism, I wouldn’t have wanted to explain to her the presence of a dating app on my phone. She sort of shrugged and said, “Sure, whatever,” and off I went. The app asked to connect to my Facebook account, but promised it wouldn’t post anything on my behalf. I figured it would pull in my name and photo, but I wondered if it would make note of my relationship status being “Married. The app either didn’t notice or didn’t care, though.
Modern life is ugly, brutal and barren. Maybe you should try a Latin Mass. The New York Times. By Tara Isabella Burton.
We’re part of the Body of Christ. We’re Christians. We’re Liberal. We make no apologies. In fact Jesus ways are “Liberal.” That’s why He was killed.
Christian Unitarian Universalists reflect on their faith, their unique position within Unitarian Universalism, and the great diversity of spiritual practices and worship cultures across their community. Buy Now. Nothing has ever been simple about Jesus. He confounded and confused people in his own time, and so it is no wonder Unitarian Universalists today are still wrestling with him, his message, and the tradition that claims him as a God.
Yet I believe that people who are attracted to a place of free faith, spiritual seeking, and non-dogmatic religion have much to gain by grappling with the legacy of this teacher whose power and charisma seem undimmed from two thousand years ago. If anything, we are only beginning to understand the radical nature of his message.
I became a Unitarian Universalist because I would have made a very bad and quarrelsome Christian, but a pretty good religious liberal. This faith seems to claim the religious freedom that Jesus proclaimed and modeled. Jesus has taught me not to worship false idols, but rather the Divine Love that broods over all and lives inside each. This sort of love requires a tradition of openness, tolerance, freedom, and radical compassion.
I became a UU precisely because I wanted to understand Jesus properly. It is difficult to explain the label Unitarian Universalist Christian, yet it expresses the simple truth that Jesus and his life, message, charisma, and death haunt me. Jesus is a spiritual genius, one of many we may choose to learn from, but still the one who most compels me to become the person I am meant to be. I do not believe Jesus is the sole revelation of the Divine, and I do not know, but seriously doubt, if he was raised from the dead, or for that matter, ever meant to create something called Christianity.
Twenty years later, that ritual strikes me as almost innocuous — how much power do we give to the scribbled signature of a teenager who had only the faintest idea what sex was? Yet it also carried a psychological burden that many of my peers and I are still unloading. It held out the promise that if I remained pure, then God would reward good behavior with a husband — surely before I turned 30 so that we could have lots of children.

The idea of American exceptionalism has become so dubious that much of its modern usage is merely sarcastic. But when it comes to religion, Americans really are exceptional. No rich country prays nearly as much as the U. S, and no country that prays as much as the U. In the late 19th century, an array of celebrity philosophers—the likes of Friedrich Nietzsche, Karl Marx, and Sigmund Freud— proclaimed the death of God, and predicted that atheism would follow scientific discovery and modernity in the West, sure as smoke follows fire.
